Brief History of Bishop Mahiaini Academy

This timeless truth continues to guide the mission of Bishop Mahiaini Academy and the wider education vision of the ACK Diocese of Mt. Kenya Central. The history of education in the Diocese dates back to 1903, with the arrival of the first missionaries at Wethaga. Wherever they established themselves, three key institutions formed the foundation of community transformation: the Church, the School, and the Hospital. These pillars marked the beginning of over a century of educational excellence and spiritual formation in the region. Over the years, the Diocese has been instrumental in the establishment and growth of leading institutions such as Kahuhia, Kiaguthu, Njumbi, and Wahundura. These schools, supported by numerous preparatory and primary institutions, have played a critical role in shaping generations of learners and leaders.

The Birth of Bishop Mahiaini Academy

The vision to establish a diocesan private primary school emerged in the mid-1980s following the division of the larger Diocese of Mt. Kenya South in 1984. At the time, the only existing private school under the Church, Thika Memorial School, remained under the Diocese of Thika. Recognizing the need for a similar institution within Mt. Kenya Central, the Diocesan leadership initiated plans to establish a new school. Through consultation, research, and resource mobilization, the then Bishop, Rt. Rev. John Mahiaini, secured land from the County Council in the Karaha area. In 1988, Bishop Mahiaini Academy was officially founded as a private institution owned, managed, and run by the Diocese of Mt. Kenya Central. Prior to the school’s opening, Bishop Mahiaini established C.P.K Karaha Church, reinforcing the strong spiritual foundation upon which the school was built. The parish was under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Ndung’u Muiruri of Maragi Parish at the time. From its inception, Bishop Mahiaini Academy became the first private school in Murang’a North, attracting pupils from across the region due to its strong academic and moral grounding.

Growth and Legacy

Since its establishment, Bishop Mahiaini Academy has consistently produced outstanding academic results, with many of its alumni excelling in various professional fields. Among its notable alumni is Hon. Dr. Mugo, the current Member of Parliament for Mathioya, alongside many other distinguished individuals. The school has maintained a strong commitment to spiritual development, with a full-time chaplain supporting the moral and spiritual well being of learners. This unique integration of faith and education continues to shape disciplined, responsible, and principled individuals. Academically, the school has remained competitive within Murang’a County and beyond, earning recognition for its commitment to excellence.
